New Article on Speculative Faith

Hey, all! Not sure if you've read the article in Publisher's Weekly about the state of Fantasy and SciFi in the Christian Bookseller's Market. Let's just say the article paints a bleak picture. Pretty bleak, and in my humble opinion, pretty inaccurate. I've written an open letter response to PW over at Specualtive Faith Website.

That's right...do you want the red pill or the blue pill? ;-)

I loved your essay on this. Good response.

I'd be curious what you'd think of Brandon Barr's comment at the end of The Sword Review tour. He wondered why Christian scifi/fantasy writers don't seem to contribute much short fiction anywhere.

And I thought of you. Do you write short fiction as well?

Hey, Mark

I'll have to check out his comments. I do write short fiction--or at least I did. Right now I just don't have time to focus on that. And I think to write "good" short fiction, a writer needs to focus big time. Economy of words and all that. I should try it again between novel deadlines, but during the crush, I just can't squeeze it in.

Dear Mr. Batson,

I'll make this short. I am trying to raise 5 kids to be godly in an ungodly world. I also want to do this without arrogance or self-righteousness. I think you know exactly what I am talking about. I want my children to become the most inquisitive scientists, shrewd statesmen, and humble theologians, or whatever their particular bent is. The heroes that I want my kids to emulate aren't typically "poster" material. My oldest son Hayden is turning 13 in July and I am preparing a book of letters from people from whom we want him to draw inspiration and encouragement. Since we as Americans really have no "write of passage "per se I am hoping to present him with this book from which to draw inspiration as he grows toward manhood. I was hoping that you would be able to write a short note and challenge him in the area of using his gfts for THE Kingdom. I can forward a stamped envelope if you are able to correspond. I completely understand if this is not possible but would greatly appreciate it if you could invest this time in my son. I was hoping to have gathered all the letters by June 15th. Regardless of your answer, I appreciate what you do for Christ. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Sincerely,
Todd Renfrow

"write" of passage was a Freudian slip!

Todd,

I'd be happy to. Do you want something handwritten? Or is email ok? Either way is fine with me.

If you wish something handwritten, just email me your snail mail address:
