You Cannot Have it Both Ways

America is paddling quickly in dangerous waters toward an unyielding and more perilous destination. With one breath we seem to want to exert a "moral right" to just about anything we want. Gay marriage, polygamy, divorce on demand, premarital sex, abortion, legalized drug use, ad infinitum. And yet, with the next breath, we deny that there is such a thing as absolute right and wrong. But we cannot have it both ways. Work it out with any kind of logic, and you'll see it ties itself in knots.

To insist on certain "rights," asserts that there is a right and a wrong. But when we push people with such contradictory views to define the standard upon which "their rights" are based, we get a mish-mash of pragmatics and emotions. In other words, such relativistic folks will say, we have a right to whatever works and whatever feels good, so long as it doesn't infringe upon anyone else's right to whatever works and whatever feels good.

The thread that unravels this whole mess is this: If two individuals find their "whatever works" and "whatever feels good" at odds, whose "whatever works" and "whatever feels good" takes priority, and how do you decide? How long do you think it will take before this rationale turns into "might makes right?"

Others may claim that there actually IS an objective right and wrong, but they will refuse to define it. It's just something that is "self evident." But, if this is true, we have to ask WHY would there be a self-evident right and wrong? How did it get there? Most relativistic people don't want to go there because that line takes you directly to God. For there to be an absolute right and wrong it MUST come from something outside of us. Otherwise, we fall right back into "whatever works" and "whatever feels right," and eventually…mob rules and might makes right.

Wake up, America, before you demand so many freedoms that you drown in them.

America is already drowning.

This is so true. Thank you. I appreciate that you are so true to the words of our God, and believe the Bible as it says it is to be believed.

I totally agree with Bookishqueen, America is already drowning. I am currently writing a persuasive essay on why abortion should be made illegal for school, and it turns out most women who have one abortion have multiple abortions. They're using abortion as birth control. America really needs to start looking to God and the Bible to see what's right and wrong. He's the only thing that's definite and reliable. If He is not our rock and foundation our nation will crumble, and I'm already seeing cracks.

I enjoyed the apologetics/absolute truth aspect of this post, Mr. Batson. Well written!
Your third-last paragraph about people's "whatever works" being at odds was excellent, by the way.

You're absolutely right Mr. Batson. America is sinking, and we need to wake up, and stand up. Thanks for sharing this. :)

It is probably unhealthy for people to always want more. This is undoubtedly true when it comes to freedoms. That said, this article is based on a slippery slope fallacy, where more freedoms today lead to an unstable, chaotic future. Unfortunately for Christians, the bible is only THEIR holy book. Why should Americans have to follow YOUR book, instead of the Torah, or the Koran, or the satanic bible even? Why should THIS religion get precedence?

Hi, Anon, thanks for posing a bit of a counterpoint. However, I think that perhaps you misapplied your logic foundations. The argument is simply this: we cannot deny morality, yet demand rights at the same time. Their must be a standard or it's just mob rules in the end. As far as why the Bible, why Christianity? That's a great question. Certainly worthy of research and much thought, as not only this life, but eternity hang in the balance. If I had to try to convince the rest of the world that Jesus is the best way and, in fact, the only way, I would say this:
1) Christianity has the greatest foundation in archeology, history, documentation, world impact, and empirical evidence.
2) When you become a Christian and study the word, life FINALLY makes sense.
3) Last, but most important: Christianity is the only religion where God comes for man. ie: Jesus died for us to pay our debt of sin, a debt so massive that no amount of good works could pay it. Put another way, the supernatural saves the natural. In no other religion do we see this phenomenon. Each other faith is based on works. Work your way to heaven...

I totally agree! And yes, Bookishqueen, it is, sadly.

I just...wow. I can't even think of anything witty to say. Thanks Mr. Batson, for an excellent point. Logic together with facts always leads to God and His Word!

Your right in all respect's. My parents have taught me the ins and outs of the many wrong things in this world and my pastor has even more drilled it into my head. But there is just one question I just don't get an answer to. "Why are people evil, gay, etc." My elders always try to explain, but it usually just sounds like a bunch of mumbo jumbo that I can't understand. Although my pastor did a fine job explaining it, there are still a lot of questions that came along with his answers.
